The MERCOSUR interchangeable tool market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of interchangeable tools for hand tools, when their volume increased by 38% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, interchangeable tool exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the main exporter of interchangeable tools for hand tools in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together committing a 19% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +2.8% from 2012-2021. Peru and Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Brazil (+20 p.p.), Chile (+1.8 p.p.) and Peru (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest interchangeable tool supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil stood at -2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (-1.2% per year) and Peru (-5.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, imports of interchangeable tools for hand tools in MERCOSUR surged to X tons, increasing by 62% on the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

At the same time, Chile (+9.8%), Ecuador (+3.4%) and Peru (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +9.8% from 2012-2021. Colombia and Argentina experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Chile (+10 p.p.) and Peru (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Brazil (-11.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported interchangeable tools for hand tools in MERCOSUR, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to -4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (+1.6% per year) and Chile (-0.0% per year).

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a pronounced decrease.
