As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) fell rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 196%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports of remained at a lower figure.

Brazil was the key exporter of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 42% of total exports in 2021. Colombia (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (14%), Suriname (7.9%) and Peru (6.4%). Argentina (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Suriname (with a CAGR of +29.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Chile ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 79% of total exports. These countries were followed by Argentina, Suriname and Peru, which together accounted for a further 14%.

Suriname, with a CAGR of +25.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Suriname ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, approx. X tons of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) were imported in MERCOSUR; with an increase of 54% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +108.9% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Brazil represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 45% of total imports. Colombia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Peru (15%) and Argentina (13%). Chile (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+11.3%) and Peru (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2021. Argentina and Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ecuador (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Colombia (+8.3 p.p.), Brazil (+5.6 p.p.) and Peru (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Argentina (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) in MERCOSUR, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled +2.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-2.3% per year) and Colombia (+4.1% per year).
