In 2022, the average lemon and lime yield in MERCOSUR reached X tons per ha, approximately reflecting 2021. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the lemon and lime yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of lemons and limes in MERCOSUR contracted to X ha, with a decrease of -5.4% on the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to lemon and lime production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -11% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Argentina represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together generating a 46% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +28.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Argentina ($X), Brazil ($X) and Chile ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 84% share of total exports. Colombia, Peru and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +34.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 30%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, supplies from abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -10.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Chile was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 56% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Paraguay (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons), together mixing up a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Ecuador (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) - together made up 9.5% of total imports.

Imports into Chile increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+19.7%), Paraguay (+14.4%), Ecuador (+6.5%) and Uruguay (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012-2022. Colombia and Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Chile (+10 p.p.), Paraguay (+5.8 p.p.) and Argentina (+5.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Uruguay (-2.1 p.p.), Colombia (-4 p.p.) and Brazil (-14.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lemons and limes in MERCOSUR, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile totaled +10.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-1.5% per year) and Argentina (+18.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 15%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
