Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, exports of machines for working wire in MERCOSUR dropped to X units, with a decrease of -10% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, working wire machine exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild expansion. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 71% of total exports in 2021. Chile (X units) took a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ecuador (6.3%) and Paraguay (4.8%). The following exporters - Argentina (X units), Colombia (X units) and Peru (X units) - each accounted for a 9.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to working wire machine exports from Brazil stood at -25.0%. At the same time, Ecuador (+16.7%), Paraguay (+14.7%) and Argentina (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2021. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Chile (-9.6%) and Peru (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+6.3 p.p.), Ecuador (+6.2 p.p.), Paraguay (+4.8 p.p.), Argentina (+3 p.p.), Colombia (+2.8 p.p.) and Peru (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Brazil saw its share reduced by -25.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest working wire machine supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+24.4% per year) and Paraguay (+25.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 506% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Colombia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+37.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of machines for working wire increased by 59% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, working wire machine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the major importing country with an import of around X units, which finished at 47% of total imports. Peru (X units) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (13%), Colombia (7.9%) and Argentina (5%). The following importers - Venezuela (X units) and Ecuador (X units) - together made up 5.4% of total imports.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -8.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+14.6%) and Colombia (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012-2021. Ecuador experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Peru (-4.3%), Argentina (-12.9%) and Venezuela (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+11 p.p.), Colombia (+5.5 p.p.) and Peru (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil saw its share reduced by -4.8%, -5.1% and -10.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machines for working wire in MERCOSUR, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil totaled -2.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (-1.1% per year) and Colombia (+1.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, rising by 17% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, working wire machine import price decreased by -11.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per unit), while Venezuela ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
