The MERCOSUR preserved mackerel market expanded slightly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, overseas shipments of mackerel (prepared or preserved) decreased by -12.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 32%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved mackerel exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 39%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ecuador represented the key exporter of mackerel (prepared or preserved) in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), mixing up a 12% share of total exports. Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Ecuador was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mackerel (prepared or preserved) exports, with a CAGR of +31.9% from 2012 to 2021. Peru (-25.0%) and Chile (-37.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ecuador (+82 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Peru (-25 p.p.) and Chile (-57.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) remains the largest preserved mackerel supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In Ecuador, preserved mackerel exports increased at an average annual rate of +34.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (-19.9% per year) and Chile (-38.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Preserved Mackerel Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, overseas purchases of mackerel (prepared or preserved) increased by 75% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved mackerel imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 163%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Chile represented the main importer of mackerel (prepared or preserved) in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2021. Guyana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Argentina (X tons) and Colombia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 34% share of total imports. Peru (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mackerel (prepared or preserved) imports, with a CAGR of +38.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Argentina (+22.5%), Peru (+14.0%), Colombia (+11.7%) and Guyana (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Chile (+45 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Peru, Colombia and Guyana saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -9.2% and -21.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mackerel (prepared or preserved) in MERCOSUR, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile amounted to +39.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+21.0% per year) and Colombia (+6.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the import price showed a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Guyana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
