In 2021, after five years of decline, there was growth in the MERCOSUR market for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences, when its value increased by 1.8% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 10%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fourth year in a row, MERCOSUR recorded decline in overseas shipments of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences, which decreased by -16.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Venezuela (X tons), mixing up a 10% share of total exports. Paraguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports from Brazil stood at -10.3%. Paraguay (-4.8%) and Venezuela (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Venezuela (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Brazil saw its share reduced by -4.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Venezuela ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

In Brazil, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports decreased by an average annual rate of -15.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Venezuela (-10.3% per year) and Paraguay (-4.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -31.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Manufactured Tobacco, Extracts And Essences

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, supplies from abroad of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences decreased by -16.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Argentina (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) represented roughly 75% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), achieving a 14% share of total imports. Uruguay (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Colombia ($X), Argentina ($X) and Paraguay ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total imports. Uruguay, Brazil and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

Uruguay, with a CAGR of +18.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences import price increased by +67.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+16.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
