Mattress Support Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR mattress support market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattress support production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 8.5% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, exports of mattress supports in MERCOSUR reduced to X units, waning by -10.9% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 86%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mattress support exports reached $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -25.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the key exporter of mattress supports in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2021. Chile (X units) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Paraguay (6.2%). Argentina (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mattress supports exports, with a CAGR of +26.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Paraguay (-9.6%) and Argentina (-20.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+51 p.p.) and Chile (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Paraguay (-26.5 p.p.) and Argentina (-27.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Paraguay ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 97% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +17.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Paraguay ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (-2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of mattress supports, when their volume increased by 57% to X units. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 64%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mattress support imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X units) was the key importer of mattress supports, comprising 50% of total imports. Uruguay (X units) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Suriname (11%), Argentina (6.4%) and Guyana (4.8%). Paraguay (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mattress supports imports, with a CAGR of +60.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guyana (+10.4%), Argentina (+7.9%), Uruguay (+7.7%), Paraguay (+4.5%) and Suriname (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Chile (+49 p.p.) and Uruguay (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Suriname (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mattress supports in MERCOSUR, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Suriname, with a 7.7% share.

In Chile, mattress support imports expanded at an average annual rate of +52.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uruguay (+3.3% per year) and Suriname (+1.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, surging by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight downturn. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guyana ($X per unit), while Suriname ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
