Mattress Market Size in MERCOSUR

In 2022, the MERCOSUR mattress market decreased by -0.9% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 6.7%. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattress production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, shipments abroad of mattresses decreased by -12% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, mattress exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Brazil prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Chile (X units), Argentina (X units) and Paraguay (X units), together making up a 17% share of total exports. Colombia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mattresses exports, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012 to 2022. Colombia (-1.4%), Argentina (-6.9%), Paraguay (-8.7%) and Chile (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil increased by +51 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest mattress supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at +13.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (-15.3% per year) and Paraguay (-6.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per unit), while Argentina ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+9.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Mattress Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of mattresses, when their volume decreased by -30.6% to X units. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, mattress imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Chile was the largest importer of mattresses in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was near 40% of total imports in 2022. Uruguay (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 21% share, followed by Brazil (13%), Colombia (10%) and Peru (5.1%). The following importers - Argentina (X units) and Guyana (X units) - together made up 6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Uruguay (with a CAGR of +5.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest mattress importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Uruguay ($X) and Colombia ($X), with a combined 72% share of total imports. Guyana, Brazil, Peru and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Among the main importing countries, Guyana, with a CAGR of +15.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 30% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guyana ($X per unit), while Brazil ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guyana (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
