In 2022, the average camel and other animal meat yield in MERCOSUR shrank to X kg per head, almost unchanged from 2021. The shipments of the four major exporters of meat of camels and other animals, namely Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and Peru, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Uruguay (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Ecuador (with a CAGR of +4.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, Chile ($X), Argentina ($X) and Peru ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 82% of total exports.
Peru, with a CAGR of +4.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 25%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Meat of Camels and Other Animals
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, approx. X tons of meat of camels and other animals were imported in MERCOSUR; rising by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 208% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Suriname (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) dominates imports structure, together committing 82% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Guyana (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together committing a 13% share of total imports. Argentina (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +27.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Venezuela ($X), Suriname ($X) and Guyana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Colombia and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.5%.
Among the main importing countries, Argentina, with a CAGR of +33.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -13.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Suriname ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
