Ecuador was the largest exporter of medicaments containing penicillins or derivatives thereof in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 77% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X kg), mixing up a 12% share of total exports. Brazil (X kg), Colombia (X kg) and Chile (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Ecuador increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Argentina (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-11.0%), Brazil (-20.6%) and Colombia (-36.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ecuador (+65 p.p.) and Argentina (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Brazil (-7.8 p.p.) and Colombia (-68.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ecuador ($X) remains the largest medicaments containing penicillin supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ecuador stood at +12.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (+2.1% per year) and Colombia (-27.9% per year).

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a resilient increase. In 2021, the amount of medicaments containing penicillins or derivatives thereof imported in MERCOSUR fell markedly to X tons, waning by -18.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, medicaments containing penicillin imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the key importers of medicaments containing penicillins or derivatives thereof in 2021, reaching approx. 39% and 36% of total imports, respectively. Based on 2021 figures, medicaments containing penicillin import price increased by +31.4% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
