Exports in MERCOSUR
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of mixes and doughs decreased by -9.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 180%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mixes and doughs exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 145% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Brazil represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 56% of total exports. Argentina (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 28% share, followed by Paraguay (6.6%) and Colombia (4.6%). Uruguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mixes and doughs exports, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+37.7%), Colombia (+16.9%) and Uruguay (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Argentina (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+53 p.p.), Paraguay (+6.6 p.p.) and Colombia (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Argentina saw its share reduced by -61.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest mixes and doughs supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to +27.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (+0.2% per year) and Uruguay (+4.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Mixes And Doughs Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of mixes and doughs, when their volume decreased by -0.9% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mixes and doughs imports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Venezuela dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2022. Colombia (X tons) took a 7.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Brazil (5.6%) and Chile (4.9%). The following importers - Argentina (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) - together made up 9% of total imports.
Venezuela was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mixes and doughs imports, with a CAGR of +41.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+30.8%), Chile (+21.9%), Peru (+20.0%), Ecuador (+11.9%) and Colombia (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Brazil (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Venezuela (+63 p.p.), Chile (+3.4 p.p.), Argentina (+2.8 p.p.) and Peru (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Colombia (-4.6 p.p.) and Brazil (-59 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Venezuela ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mixes and doughs in MERCOSUR, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Venezuela totaled +31.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (+18.8% per year) and Colombia (+2.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 1.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mixes and doughs import price increased by +9.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
