The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +74.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, exports of motorcycles and cycles with an auxiliary motor skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 120%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ecuador prevails in motor structure, recording X units, which was near 72% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Paraguay (X units), Brazil (X units) and Suriname (X units), together achieving a 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Chile (X units) and Argentina (X units) - together made up 4.8% of total exports.

Ecuador was also the fastest-growing in terms of the motorcycles and cycles with an auxiliary motor exports, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Suriname (+26.0%) and Paraguay (+19.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Chile (-2.8%), Argentina (-4.4%) and Brazil (-18.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ecuador, Paraguay, Suriname and Chile increased by +68, +5.9, +4.4 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Paraguay ($X), Chile ($X) and Ecuador ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 61% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Paraguay, with a CAGR of +26.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 73% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Ecuador ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of motorcycles and cycles with an auxiliary motor increased by 65% to X units, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, faced a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 81%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of motorcycles and cycles with an auxiliary motor skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, imports of reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X units) represented the main importer of motorcycles and cycles with an auxiliary motor, generating 57% of total imports. Chile (X units) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (7.8%). The following importers - Suriname (X units) and Uruguay (X units) - each amounted to a 5.3% share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -16.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+27.2%) and Colombia (+15.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uruguay (-10.1%) and Suriname (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+26 p.p.) and Colombia (+7.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Brazil saw its share reduced by -35.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motorcycles and cycles with an auxiliary motor in MERCOSUR, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at -14.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (+17.8% per year) and Colombia (+6.7% per year).
