Nail and bolt exports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 24% on the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nail and bolt exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 24%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the main exporter of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together constituting a 23% share of total exports. Argentina (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts exports, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Peru (+4.6%) and Colombia (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Argentina (-5.6%) and Chile (-17.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+16 p.p.) and Peru (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Argentina and Chile saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -14.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest nail and bolt supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 4.4% share.

In Brazil, nail and bolt exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (+0.1% per year) and Peru (+4.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts increased by 62% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Brazil represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together comprising a 48% share of total imports. The following importers - Ecuador (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) - together made up 5.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to nail and bolt imports into Brazil stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Chile (+9.5%), Paraguay (+9.0%), Argentina (+6.8%), Peru (+5.8%) and Colombia (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ecuador (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+7 p.p.), Argentina (+2.3 p.p.) and Peru (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ecuador (-2 p.p.) and Brazil (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 12% share.
