Oat Market Size in MERCOSUR
In 2022, the MERCOSUR oat market decreased by -5.6% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together comprising 97% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +8.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average oat yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, declining by -5.6% compared with 2021. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the oat yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of oats, when their volume increased by 602% to X tons. Overall, exports enjoyed a modest increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
In 2022, Chile (X tons) was the largest exporter of oats, making up 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), generating a 17% share of total exports. Uruguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of oats. At the same time, Brazil (+21.2%) and Uruguay (+18.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Brazil (+14 p.p.) and Uruguay (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Chile (-11.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Chile ($X) emerged as the largest oat supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile stood at +1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+7.6% per year) and Uruguay (+19.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -41.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 84%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, overseas purchases of oats decreased by -47.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 181%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, oat imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 208%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Peru (X tons) was the major importer of oats, committing 57% of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Uruguay (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total imports.
Imports into Peru increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uruguay (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uruguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +5.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ecuador (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Peru and Uruguay increased by +13 and +5.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Peru ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oats in MERCOSUR, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ecuador ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.
In Peru, oat imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ecuador (-3.9% per year) and Uruguay (+3.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -13.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton.
