The MERCOSUR office supply market expanded to $X in 2022, growing by 4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a measured expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of office or school supplies of plastics increased by 9.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, office supply exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the main exporter of office or school supplies of plastics, achieving 57% of total exports. Colombia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Uruguay (11%), Peru (9.9%) and Chile (8.3%). Argentina (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to office supply exports from Brazil stood at -2.4%. At the same time, Chile (+11.1%), Uruguay (+2.6%) and Argentina (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Peru (-12.1%) and Colombia (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+13 p.p.), Chile (+6.5 p.p.) and Uruguay (+5.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Peru and Colombia saw its share reduced by -12% and -14% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest office supply supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Colombia ($X), together comprising 84% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +8.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of office or school supplies of plastics increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, office supply imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 27%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons) was the major importer of office or school supplies of plastics, generating 35% of total imports. Argentina (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (14%), Brazil (9.4%), Peru (7.9%) and Ecuador (7.7%). Uruguay (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +6.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported office or school supplies of plastics in MERCOSUR, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile amounted to +3.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+0.2% per year) and Colombia (-7.0% per year).
