In 2021, overseas shipments of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, oils from coal tar exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Brazil represented the largest exporter of oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 73% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), constituting a 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ecuador (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) - together made up 6.5% of total exports.
Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar exports, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012 to 2021. Argentina (-5.5%), Venezuela (-19.4%) and Ecuador (-33.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+63 p.p.) and Argentina (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Venezuela (-5.9 p.p.) and Ecuador (-61.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) emerged as the largest oils from coal tar supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to +11.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (-7.8% per year) and Ecuador (-32.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 32% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR
Oils from coal tar imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, rising by 79% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -6.7% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ecuador prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), achieving a 9.6% share of total imports.
Imports into Ecuador increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2021. Brazil (+4.6 p.p.) and Ecuador (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Ecuador ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oils and other products of the distillation of high temperature coal tar in MERCOSUR, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 10% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ecuador totaled -2.8%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
