Market Size for Optical Fibers and Bundles in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR optical fiber and bundle market dropped significantly to $X in 2022, which is down by -19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Optical Fibers and Bundles in MERCOSUR

In value terms, optical fiber and bundle production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 12%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, optical fiber and bundle exports in MERCOSUR rose to X tons, with an increase of 4.6% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, optical fiber and bundle exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), committing a 6% share of total exports.

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -14.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+159.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +159.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Chile (+6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest optical fiber and bundle supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled -15.5%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 54%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Brazil totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-1.2%).

Imports of Optical Fibers and Bundles

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, supplies from abroad of optical fibers and bundles decreased by -17.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, optical fiber and bundle imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Argentina represented the largest importer of optical fibers and bundles in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 66% of total imports in 2022. Brazil (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (4.5%). Ecuador (X tons) and Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Argentina decreased at an average annual rate of -3.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+25.0%), Peru (+21.8%), Ecuador (+20.7%) and Brazil (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +25.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru increased by +11, +4.1, +3.1 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported optical fibers and bundles in MERCOSUR, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil amounted to +1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-5.5% per year) and Ecuador (+21.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, optical fiber and bundle import price increased by +59.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
