Other Cereals Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR other cereals market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, picking up by 28% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -18.1% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Other Cereals Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, other cereals production shrank markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 237%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Chile (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Brazil (X tons), together accounting for 90% of total production. These countries were followed by Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador, which together accounted for a further 9.5%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average other cereals yield in MERCOSUR expanded sharply to X tons per ha, surging by 7.6% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the other cereals yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of other cerealses in MERCOSUR reached X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 15%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the other cereals harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Other Cereals Exports

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the amount of other cerealses exported in MERCOSUR shrank slightly to X tons, waning by -2.1% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 105%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Peru prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Ecuador (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) - together made up 4.3% of total exports.

Peru was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses exports, with a CAGR of +17.4% from 2012 to 2021. Ecuador experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Argentina (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Peru increased by +38 percentage points.

In value terms, Peru ($X) remains the largest other cereals supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.

In Peru, other cereals exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ecuador (-0.5% per year) and Argentina (-1.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -15% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 114%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Other Cereals Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

Other cereals imports reduced to X tons in 2021, dropping by -12.7% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X tons), distantly followed by Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) represented the major importers of other cerealses, together generating 89% of total imports. Uruguay (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Chile (with a CAGR of +24.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest other cereals importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Argentina ($X), together comprising 88% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +19.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
