For the fifth consecutive year, the MERCOSUR paint and varnish market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 1% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, paint and varnish exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Brazil dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2022. Argentina (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.8% share, followed by Colombia (4.6%). The following exporters - Uruguay (X tons) and Chile (X tons) - each reached a 4.9% share of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paints and varnishes exports, with a CAGR of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Colombia (-1.3%), Argentina (-4.5%) and Uruguay (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Uruguay (-4 p.p.) and Argentina (-6.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest paint and varnish supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil stood at +2.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (-4.2% per year) and Colombia (-5.5% per year).

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, imports of paints and varnishes in MERCOSUR dropped to X tons, declining by -3.6% compared with 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, paint and varnish imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Chile (X tons), Paraguay (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) was the key importer of paints and varnishes in MERCOSUR, mixing up 75% of total import. Ecuador (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Peru (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons). All these countries together held near 20% share of total imports. Guyana (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Guyana (with a CAGR of +5.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Argentina ($X) and Colombia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 59% of total imports. Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Guyana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Guyana, with a CAGR of +7.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
