The MERCOSUR papaya market totaled $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Papaya Production in MERCOSUR
In value terms, papaya production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Brazil (X tons) remains the largest papaya producing country in MERCOSUR, accounting for 65% of total volume. Moreover, papaya production in Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Peru (X tons), sevenfold. Colombia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Brazil stood at -2.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Peru (+4.3% per year) and Colombia (+0.3% per year).
The average papaya yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, showed a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 8.4% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of papayas were harvested in MERCOSUR; almost unchanged from the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 9.5%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the papaya harvested area remained at a lower figure.
Papaya Exports
Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, the amount of papayas exported in MERCOSUR shrank rapidly to X tons, waning by -20.5% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, papaya exports fell to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Brazil (X tons), together recording 98% of total export.
Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the papayas exports, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil increased by +25 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) also remains the largest papaya supplier in MERCOSUR.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at +3.2%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Brazil.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Brazil amounted to -1.1% per year.
Papaya Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
After six years of growth, purchases abroad of papayas decreased by -29.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 162%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, papaya imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 131%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Paraguay (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) dominates imports structure, together comprising 90% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uruguay (X tons), generating an 8.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +22.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Argentina ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas in MERCOSUR, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uruguay ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Argentina amounted to +27.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uruguay (+14.4% per year) and Paraguay (+6.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 45% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 70% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
