After two years of growth, the MERCOSUR paper dishes and cups market decreased by less than 0.1% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of paper trays, dishes, plates and cups were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -12.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Colombia represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 56% of total exports. Peru (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Chile (12%) and Argentina (8.4%). The following exporters - Venezuela (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) - together made up 8.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper dishes and cups exports from Colombia stood at +3.0%. At the same time, Venezuela (+41.8%), Peru (+9.6%), Argentina (+2.4%) and Ecuador (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Venezuela emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-5.6%) and Brazil (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Peru, Venezuela and Colombia increased by +6.2, +4.2 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the largest paper dishes and cups supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 13% share.

In Colombia, paper dishes and cups exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+8.0% per year) and Chile (-6.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, paper dishes and cups imports in MERCOSUR surged to X tons, increasing by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 65%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, paper dishes and cups imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Chile was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 58% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), Peru (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Guyana (X tons), together achieving a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Uruguay (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) - each reached a 4.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper dishes and cups imports into Chile stood at +31.8%. At the same time, Guyana (+47.2%), Peru (+24.4%), Colombia (+18.5%), Brazil (+11.4%) and Uruguay (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guyana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +47.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Venezuela (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+37 p.p.), Guyana (+4.8 p.p.) and Peru (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Uruguay (-2.1 p.p.), Brazil (-5.2 p.p.) and Venezuela (-19.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper trays, dishes, plates and cups in MERCOSUR, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile stood at +21.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+11.9% per year) and Colombia (+14.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 18% against the previous year.
