Peach And Nectarine Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR peach and nectarine market fell slightly to $X in 2021, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, peach and nectarine production declined modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 25%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Chile (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Brazil (X tons), with a combined 86% share of total production. These countries were followed by Peru, Colombia and Venezuela, which together accounted for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +2.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

In 2021, the average yield of peaches and nectarines in MERCOSUR dropped slightly to X tons per ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 13%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the peach and nectarine yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The peach and nectarine harvested area stood at X ha in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 9.4%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to peach and nectarine production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of peaches and nectarines, when their volume decreased by -4.6% to X tons. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, peach and nectarine exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Chile prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. Argentina (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of peaches and nectarines. Argentina (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest peach and nectarine supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 2.1% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina amounted to $X per ton.

In 2021, purchases abroad of peaches and nectarines decreased by -18% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, peach and nectarine imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7.1%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the main importer of peaches and nectarines, making up 63% of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Paraguay (9.7%), Colombia (5.8%) and Peru (5.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to peach and nectarine imports into Brazil stood at -8.6%. At the same time, Paraguay (+13.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-2.5%), Ecuador (-7.4%) and Colombia (-17.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Paraguay (+8.2 p.p.) and Peru (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Brazil (-3.7 p.p.) and Colombia (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peaches and nectarines in MERCOSUR, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to -7.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ecuador (-6.1% per year) and Colombia (-17.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
