Green Peas Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR green peas market amounted to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Green Peas Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, green peas production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Peru (X tons) remains the largest green peas producing country in MERCOSUR, accounting for 68% of total volume. Moreover, green peas production in Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Argentina (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ecuador (X tons), with a 9.3% share.

In Peru, green peas production increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+0.5% per year) and Ecuador (+14.4% per year).

The average green peas yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of peas (green) production in MERCOSUR declined modestly to X ha, approximately reflecting the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 8.1%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the green peas harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

After four years of growth, overseas shipments of peas (green) decreased by -6.8% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +83.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, green peas exports shrank to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +36.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Peru (X tons) represented the largest exporter of peas (green) in MERCOSUR, committing 99% of total export.

Peru was also the fastest-growing in terms of the peas (green) exports, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Peru (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Peru ($X) also remains the largest green peas supplier in MERCOSUR.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Peru.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Peru amounted to +0.4% per year.

Green Peas Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of peas (green), when their volume decreased by -23.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 133%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, green peas imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 128%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Peru (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 90% of total imports. The following importers - Venezuela (X tons) and Chile (X tons) - each finished at an 8.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +58.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Colombia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peas (green) in MERCOSUR, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 29% share of total imports. It was followed by Venezuela, with a 4.7% share.

In Colombia, green peas imports expanded at an average annual rate of +25.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+46.5% per year) and Venezuela (-6.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, green peas import price increased by +60.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
