In value terms, pigeon peas production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Colombia (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons), with a combined 89% share of total production.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 99%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pigeon peas exports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 80%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Peru (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons), together recording 99% of total export.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +21.5%).

In value terms, Peru ($X) remains the largest pigeon peas supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

In Peru, pigeon peas exports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pigeon peas export price increased by +47.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 26%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Ecuador stood at $X per ton.

Imports in MERCOSUR

Pigeon peas imports declined to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -11.1% compared with the previous year. In general, imports recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 154% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pigeon peas imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 196% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Peru was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total imports.

Imports into Peru decreased at an average annual rate of -5.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+30.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of Chile (+15 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Peru (-12.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Peru ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pigeon peas in MERCOSUR, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 13% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Peru was relatively modest.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years.
