From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Peru stood at -3.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (+0.8% per year) and Argentina (+0.1% per year).
The average pimenta pepper yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -11.4% against the previous year. In general, the yield continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the pimenta pepper yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pimenta pepper production in MERCOSUR expanded slightly to X ha, increasing by 4.3% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pimenta pepper production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, overseas shipments of pimenta pepper increased by 0.7% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pimenta pepper exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +68.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Peru prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), constituting an 8.4% share of total exports. Brazil (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Peru decreased at an average annual rate of -1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Colombia (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Brazil (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Colombia increased by +3.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Peru ($X) remains the largest pimenta pepper supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Peru stood at +2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (+1.7% per year) and Brazil (-6.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of pimenta pepper imported in MERCOSUR stood at X tons, surging by 10% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 43%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, pimenta pepper imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 28%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Brazil represented the major importer of pimenta pepper in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2022. Argentina (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Chile (X tons) and Colombia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total imports. Peru (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pimenta pepper imports into Brazil stood at +12.4%. At the same time, Colombia (+18.7%), Ecuador (+18.0%), Argentina (+11.7%) and Chile (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012-2022. Peru and Uruguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Brazil (+13 p.p.), Argentina (+4.2 p.p.) and Colombia (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Peru (-4.2 p.p.), Uruguay (-4.4 p.p.) and Chile (-10.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pimenta pepper in MERCOSUR, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled +12.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+9.2% per year) and Chile (+5.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
