After three years of decline, the MERCOSUR non-cellular polyethylene film market increased by 11% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Non-cellular polyethylene film exports rose markedly to X tons in 2021, increasing by 9.9% on 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the major exporter of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 51% of total exports in 2021. Peru (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Chile (8.9%), Argentina (7.4%), Uruguay (7.2%) and Colombia (6.4%).

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip exports, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uruguay (+6.3%) and Peru (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Chile (-6.7%) and Argentina (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil, Peru and Uruguay increased by +32, +2.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest non-cellular polyethylene film supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 12% share.

In Brazil, non-cellular polyethylene film exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+1.9% per year) and Chile (-5.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight decline. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

For the fifth year in a row, MERCOSUR recorded growth in supplies from abroad of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main importers of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in MERCOSUR, together resulting at approx. 50% of total imports. Argentina (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (12%), Ecuador (7.9%), Peru (5.6%) and Uruguay (5.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ecuador (with a CAGR of +7.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-cellular polyethylene film importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Argentina ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports. Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Ecuador, with a CAGR of +7.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
