Polyamide Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR polyamide market expanded notably to $X in 2021, growing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Polyamide Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, polyamide production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Polyamide Exports

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, shipments abroad of polyamides (in primary forms) increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polyamide exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, faced a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 69% of total exports. Argentina (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Colombia (8.2%). Chile (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the polyamides (in primary forms) exports, with a CAGR of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Chile (-13.4%) and Argentina (-24.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil and Colombia increased by +52 and +6.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest polyamide supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to +1.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-24.6% per year) and Colombia (+4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 37% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Polyamide Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, purchases abroad of polyamides (in primary forms) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, polyamide imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the largest importer of polyamides (in primary forms), mixing up 69% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together achieving a 26% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to polyamide imports into Brazil stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Peru (+17.3%), Colombia (+7.0%) and Ecuador (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Argentina (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Peru, Colombia and Brazil increased by +4, +2.3 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polyamides (in primary forms) in MERCOSUR, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-2.3% per year) and Colombia (+5.2% per year).

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
