Colombia (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) represented the main exporters of polypropylene in primary forms in 2022, recording approx. 44% and 31% of total exports, respectively. Argentina (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (8.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Argentina (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of polypropylene in primary forms, when their volume decreased by -22.2% to X tons. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) and Peru (X tons) were the main importers of polypropylene in primary forms in MERCOSUR, together accounting for near 62% of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Argentina (10%) and Colombia (8.7%). The following importers - Paraguay (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Venezuela (with a CAGR of +28.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polypropylene in primary forms importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Peru ($X) and Argentina ($X), together comprising 74% of total imports. Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguay and Venezuela lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Venezuela, with a CAGR of +28.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 49%.
