In 2022, overseas shipments of pulp from fibres other than wood decreased by -11.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 339% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of pulp from fibres other than wood reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 202% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Colombia prevails in wood structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. Argentina (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Colombia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pulp from fibres other than wood exports, with a CAGR of +42.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+6.3%) and Brazil (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Chile (-21.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Colombia (+82 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Argentina, Brazil and Chile saw its share reduced by -3.4%, -3.7% and -74.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the largest pulp from fibres other than wood supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Colombia totaled +39.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+9.0% per year) and Argentina (+1.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 83% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+12.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Pulp From Fibres Other Than Wood
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, overseas purchases of pulp from fibres other than wood decreased by -23.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -32.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of pulp from fibres other than wood expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Brazil represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 79% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), creating a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Chile (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.7% share of total imports.
Imports into Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+21.1%) and Uruguay (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012-2022. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Brazil (+7.7 p.p.) and Chile (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Colombia (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pulp from fibres other than wood in MERCOSUR, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 3.1% share.
In Brazil, imports of pulp from fibres other than wood expanded at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (-4.0% per year) and Chile (+25.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
