In 2021, the average yield of raw hides and skins of cattle in MERCOSUR was estimated at X kg per head, with an increase of 1.8% compared with 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the cattle hide and skin yield attained the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2021, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in MERCOSUR; waning by -3.9% against the year before. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Argentina represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 64% of total exports. Uruguay (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (6%) and Colombia (4.9%). The following exporters - Venezuela (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.9% share of total exports.

Argentina was also the fastest-growing in terms of the raw hides and skins of cattle exports, with a CAGR of +124.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+20.4%), Uruguay (+17.4%) and Brazil (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Colombia (-7.0%) and Venezuela (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Argentina (+64 p.p.), Uruguay (+4 p.p.) and Chile (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia and Venezuela saw its share reduced by -24.8% and -43.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest cattle hide and skin supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Argentina totaled +96.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uruguay (+8.8% per year) and Colombia (-12.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (-5.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the amount of raw hides and skins of cattle imported in MERCOSUR surged to X tons, with an increase of 121% on the year before. In general, imports enjoyed significant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 197%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Brazil dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 87% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Paraguay (X tons), comprising a 5% share of total imports. Uruguay (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +49.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Paraguay (+124.9%), Colombia (+10.3%) and Argentina (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +124.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uruguay (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil and Paraguay increased by +65 and +5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw hides and skins of cattle in MERCOSUR, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Paraguay ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to +48.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Paraguay (+164.3% per year) and Argentina (-3.4% per year).
