Exports in MERCOSUR
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes decreased by -15.5% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes exports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Chile dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. Argentina (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.5% share, followed by Colombia (4.8%).
Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes exports, with a CAGR of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Argentina (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest roasted coffee substitutes supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile stood at +2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (-0.2% per year) and Argentina (-2.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, the amount of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes imported in MERCOSUR totaled X tons, surging by 3.1% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 21%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Peru dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 77% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Guyana (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together constituting a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Ecuador (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - together made up 4.5% of total imports.
Imports into Peru increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+44.7%) and Ecuador (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +44.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guyana (-5.1%) and Uruguay (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+7 p.p.) and Peru (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Uruguay and Guyana saw its share reduced by -2.6% and -8.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Peru ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes in MERCOSUR, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guyana ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 3.4% share.
In Peru, roasted coffee substitutes imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guyana (-5.0% per year) and Chile (+20.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 18% against the previous year.
