Safety Glass Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR safety glass market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, picking up by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed prominent growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, safety glass production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 22%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, overseas shipments of safety glass increased by 25% to X square meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +108.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, safety glass exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the main exporting country with an export of around X square meters, which finished at 57% of total exports. Chile (X square meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Peru (X square meters), Argentina (X square meters), Colombia (X square meters), Ecuador (X square meters) and Paraguay (X square meters). All these countries together took approx. 43% share of total exports.

Exports from Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+61.5%), Ecuador (+13.1%), Peru (+7.9%), Chile (+7.4%) and Argentina (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +61.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Colombia (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+6.1 p.p.), Paraguay (+4.5 p.p.), Chile (+4.3 p.p.), Ecuador (+3.1 p.p.) and Peru (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia saw its share reduced by -18.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest safety glass supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Peru ($X) and Colombia ($X), with a combined 83% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and Paraguay, which together accounted for a further 17%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Paraguay, with a CAGR of +44.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per square meter in 2022, increasing by 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per square meter), while Paraguay ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, the amount of safety glass imported in MERCOSUR contracted modestly to X square meters, shrinking by -1.6% against 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 67% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, safety glass imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 53%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of safety glass imports in 2022 were Brazil (X square meters), Colombia (X square meters) and Argentina (X square meters), together reaching 65% of total import. Peru (X square meters) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (10%) and Ecuador (5.2%). Uruguay (X square meters) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +16.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest safety glass importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Argentina ($X) and Chile ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports. Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Peru, with a CAGR of +10.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per square meter, declining by -2.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per square meter), while Colombia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
