In 2021, shipments abroad of salmon (prepared or preserved) decreased by -31.5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 307% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, preserved salmon exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 398% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Chile prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 98% of total exports in 2021. Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved salmon exports from Chile stood at +2.9%. At the same time, Peru (+29.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +29.7% from 2012-2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest preserved salmon supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 1.6% share of total exports.
In Chile, preserved salmon exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Peru amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+10.2%).

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, supplies from abroad of salmon (prepared or preserved) decreased by -31.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 168%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved salmon imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 170%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Colombia prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Guyana (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons), together making up a 30% share of total imports. Peru (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Colombia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the salmon (prepared or preserved) imports, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uruguay (+15.7%), Peru (+15.5%) and Ecuador (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Venezuela experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Argentina (-3.7%) and Guyana (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Colombia (+60 p.p.), Ecuador (+4.3 p.p.), Argentina (+4 p.p.), Peru (+2.9 p.p.), Venezuela (+2.7 p.p.) and Uruguay (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Colombia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported salmon (prepared or preserved) in MERCOSUR, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with an 8.5% share.
In Colombia, preserved salmon imports increased at an average annual rate of +22.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-3.7% per year) and Ecuador (+8.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
