Sesame Oil Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR sesame oil market declined to $X in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of sesame oil decreased by -23.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 104%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, sesame oil exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 94%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Paraguay (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main exporters of sesame oil in 2021, amounting to approx. 46% and 32% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), constituting a 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ecuador (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - each reached a 4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +44.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Paraguay ($X) and Peru ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total exports.

Peru, with a CAGR of +32.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 21%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (-1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of sesame oil were imported in MERCOSUR; with an increase of 17% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -5.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sesame oil imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Peru (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) dominates imports structure, together mixing up 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), comprising a 5.9% share of total imports. Colombia (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +30.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sesame oil importing markets in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Peru ($X) and Chile ($X), together comprising 89% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +30.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
