Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, shipments abroad of sesame seed decreased by -36.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 155% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame seed exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 94%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Brazil was the major exporter of sesame seed in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2022. Paraguay (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 28% share, followed by Venezuela (4.9%). Argentina (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sesame seed exports, with a CAGR of +84.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Paraguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Venezuela (-13.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, the largest sesame seed supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Paraguay ($X) and Venezuela ($X), with a combined 96% share of total exports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +80.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Venezuela (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, the amount of sesame seed imported in MERCOSUR reduced to X tons, waning by -12.7% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sesame seed imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -15.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Peru (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) represented the major importer of sesame seed in MERCOSUR, mixing up 68% of total import. Paraguay (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (7.8%) and Colombia (6.6%). Ecuador (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
