Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, overseas shipments of shawls, scarves and the like of knitted or crocheted textiles increased by 2.1% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knitted shawl and scarf exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Peru was the major exporter of shawls, scarves and the like of knitted or crocheted textiles in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X units) and Colombia (X units), together making up a 36% share of total exports. The following exporters - Brazil (X units) and Uruguay (X units) - each recorded a 3.3% share of total exports.

Exports from Peru decreased at an average annual rate of -8.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ecuador (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012-2022. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-8.4%) and Uruguay (-29.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ecuador (+15 p.p.), Colombia (+8.9 p.p.) and Peru (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Uruguay (-19 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest knitted shawl and scarf supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Peru ($X), Ecuador ($X) and Colombia ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Ecuador, with a CAGR of +10.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -13.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per unit), while Colombia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+14.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR

After three years of decline, purchases abroad of shawls, scarves and the like of knitted or crocheted textiles increased by 53% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, knitted shawl and scarf imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X units) represented the major importer of shawls, scarves and the like of knitted or crocheted textiles, generating 48% of total imports. Brazil (X units) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Peru (17%) and Colombia (5.6%). The following importers - Argentina (X units) and Uruguay (X units) - each recorded a 7.4% share of total imports.

Imports into Chile decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +2.2% from 2012-2022. Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Argentina (-6.9%), Uruguay (-8.7%) and Colombia (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Peru, Brazil and Chile increased by +6.6, +6.3 and +5.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Peru ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 78% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +0.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per unit), while Chile ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
