After two years of decline, shipments abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) increased by 74% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, faced a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X tons) represented the major exporter of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), committing 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uruguay (X tons) and Argentina (X tons), together achieving a 36% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skins (without wool) exports, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021. Uruguay (-18.1%), Peru (-22.2%) and Argentina (-24.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+47 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Peru, Argentina and Uruguay saw its share reduced by -7.3%, -16.8% and -20.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Chile ($X) emerged as the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile amounted to -14.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uruguay (-30.5% per year) and Peru (-25.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -31.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep contraction. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +135.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
