Exports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, overseas shipments of silk shawls and scarves were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 105%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, silk shawl and scarf exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 60%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Brazil (X units) and Peru (X units) dominates exports structure, together generating 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X units) and Colombia (X units), together achieving a 15% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest silk shawl and scarf supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil totaled +5.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+4.0% per year) and Peru (+4.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per unit, growing by 7.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 128%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Peru ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+27.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2022, overseas purchases of silk shawls and scarves were finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, faced a deep contraction. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, silk shawl and scarf imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Chile (X units) represented the main importer of silk shawls and scarves, mixing up 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X units), constituting a 21% share of total imports. Argentina (X units) and Paraguay (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Chile decreased at an average annual rate of -7.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+23.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Brazil (-18.5%) and Argentina (-28.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+40 p.p.) and Paraguay (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-13.6 p.p.) and Argentina (-17.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported silk shawls and scarves in MERCOSUR, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (-6.7% per year) and Argentina (-17.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -6.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 102% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while Chile ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
