Skim Milk Market Size in MERCOSUR

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in the MERCOSUR skim milk market, when its value increased by 0.9% to $X. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a mild contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Skim Milk Production in MERCOSUR

In value terms, skim milk production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 90%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Brazil (X tons) remains the largest skim milk producing country in MERCOSUR, comprising approx. 50% of total volume. Moreover, skim milk production in Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Argentina (X tons), threefold. Colombia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.

In Brazil, skim milk production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Argentina (-1.6% per year) and Colombia (-0.2% per year).

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the amount of skim milk exported in MERCOSUR soared to X tons, increasing by 88% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 155% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a sharp setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 91%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the largest exporter of skim milk in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 50% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons), together creating a 37% share of total exports. Suriname (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +58.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Argentina ($X) and Suriname ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total exports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +37.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, declining by -17.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 20%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2021, the amount of skim milk imported in MERCOSUR soared to X tons, increasing by 75% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uruguay (X tons), Venezuela (X tons) and Guyana (X tons), together mixing up a 41% share of total imports. Paraguay (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Peru (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uruguay (with a CAGR of +66.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported skim milk in MERCOSUR, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Guyana, with a 9.2% share.

In Chile, skim milk imports declined by an average annual rate of -7.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uruguay (+40.4% per year) and Guyana (-0.2% per year).
