Exports by Country
Chile represented the largest exporter of smoked fish other than salmon and herring in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X tons), making up a 19% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Chile decreased at an average annual rate of -18.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ecuador (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ecuador (+17 p.p.) and Peru (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Chile (-19.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with an 8.9% share of total exports.
In Chile, exports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring plunged by an average annual rate of -15.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ecuador (+2.0% per year) and Peru (-17.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. In 2021, approx. X tons of smoked fish other than salmon and herring were imported in MERCOSUR; picking up by 49% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports posted temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, Colombia (X tons) was the key importer of smoked fish other than salmon and herring, committing 48% of total imports. Chile (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Suriname (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Guyana (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 49% share of total imports.

While the share of Colombia (+16 p.p.), Chile (+5.9 p.p.), Suriname (+4.8 p.p.) and Guyana (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Uruguay (-5 p.p.), Ecuador (-7.8 p.p.) and Brazil (-9.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Colombia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked fish other than salmon and herring in MERCOSUR, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 9.2% share.
In Colombia, imports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring expanded at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+3.6% per year) and Brazil (-3.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 51%.
