The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32,875% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of smoked herrings, namely Guyana, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Guyana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the smoked herrings exports, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Guyana ($X) also remains the largest smoked herring supplier in MERCOSUR.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Guyana amounted to +7.3%.

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 2,238% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Guyana.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, smoked herring imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 173% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile (X tons) and Suriname (X tons) dominates imports structure, together comprising 91% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Guyana (X tons), constituting a 5.4% share of total imports. Venezuela (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Venezuela (with a CAGR of +31.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest smoked herring importing markets in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Suriname ($X) and Guyana ($X), with a combined 96% share of total imports. Venezuela lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 1.6%.

Among the main importing countries, Venezuela, with a CAGR of +27.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Chile ($X per ton) and Guyana ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) and Suriname ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guyana (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
