Spinach Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR spinach market rose modestly to $X in 2022, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. In 2022, the average yield of spinach in MERCOSUR declined notably to X tons per ha, waning by -32.3% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 97%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then shrank significantly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of spinach were harvested in MERCOSUR; with an increase of 46% against 2021. The total harvested area indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spinach harvested area decreased by -23.8% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to spinach production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, approx. X tons of spinach were exported in MERCOSUR; picking up by 5.8% compared with the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1,884% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, spinach exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 1,697% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Brazil prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Guyana (X tons), committing a 6.2% share of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the spinach exports, with a CAGR of +124.7% from 2012 to 2022. Guyana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Brazil (+91 p.p.) and Guyana (+5.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest spinach supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Guyana ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

In Brazil, spinach exports increased at an average annual rate of +156.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 58%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Guyana amounted to $X per ton.

In 2022, overseas purchases of spinach increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 223%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, spinach imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Guyana (X tons) was the key importer of spinach in MERCOSUR, achieving 99% of total import.

Guyana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the spinach imports, with a CAGR of +63.9% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Guyana increased by +90 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
