In 2022, plastic supports exports in MERCOSUR dropped markedly to X tons, with a decrease of -20.8% compared with the year before. In general, exports saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic supports exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 79%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Brazil was the main exporter of spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 52% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons), together creating a 41% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +47.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest plastic supports supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Paraguay ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to -3.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Paraguay (+10.2% per year) and Chile (+4.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Plastic Supports Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
Plastic supports imports expanded sharply to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 10% on the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 25%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, plastic supports imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +101.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 62%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Brazil was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 62% of total imports. Chile (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Argentina (5.7%) and Peru (5.5%). The following importers - Colombia (X tons), Venezuela (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) - together made up 8.6% of total imports.
Imports into Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+15.2%), Colombia (+4.4%) and Peru (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2022. Argentina experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Paraguay (-4.0%) and Venezuela (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile and Brazil increased by +11 and +6.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics in MERCOSUR, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 7.8% share.
