Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, the amount of sulphites exported in MERCOSUR skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 61% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sulphites exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Chile represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 46% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Peru (14%) and Colombia (12%). Argentina (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sulphites exports, with a CAGR of +24.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Colombia (+14.8%) and Peru (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Brazil (-5.8%) and Argentina (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile, Peru, Brazil and Colombia increased by +45, +13, +12 and +12 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest sulphites supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Colombia ($X), together comprising 81% of total exports.

Chile, with a CAGR of +23.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, the amount of sulphites imported in MERCOSUR skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 26% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +49.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Suriname (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Suriname (with a CAGR of +50.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sulphites in MERCOSUR, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil stood at +7.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ecuador (+12.4% per year) and Argentina (+14.5% per year).

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 22% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%.
