Table Linen Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR table linen market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, falling by -3.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 14%. In 2022, shipments abroad of table linen, knitted or crocheted increased by 48% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 188% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, table linen exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 180%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons) was the major exporter of table linen, knitted or crocheted, creating 54% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Colombia (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons). All these countries together took near 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - Argentina (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) - together made up 7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Paraguay (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Colombia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 86% share of total exports. Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Ecuador lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

Among the main exporting countries, Paraguay, with a CAGR of +12.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of table linen, knitted or crocheted increased by 2.8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 44%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, table linen imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together comprising a 40% share of total imports. Paraguay (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the table linen, knitted or crocheted imports, with a CAGR of +5.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Peru (-1.3%), Argentina (-1.4%), Uruguay (-5.8%) and Colombia (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Chile (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Uruguay and Colombia saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -4.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Peru ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 81% of total imports. Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Paraguay, with a CAGR of +1.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -12.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
