The MERCOSUR talc and steatite market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -1.7% against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +47.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, talc and steatite exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the largest exporter of talc and steatite in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 64% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), mixing up a 32% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +4.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest talc and steatite supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil amounted to +3.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (-3.1% per year) and Colombia (+4.4% per year).

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 7.2%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, approx. X tons of talc and steatite were imported in MERCOSUR; waning by -8.6% on the year before. In general, imports showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, talc and steatite imports rose to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The purchases of the five major importers of talc and steatite, namely Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina and Colombia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - Peru (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) - each reached a 4.3% share of total imports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +5.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
