The biggest shipments were from Brazil (X tons), together reaching 97% of total export.
Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tapioca and substitutes exports, with a CAGR of +12.3% from 2012 to 2021. Brazil (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) also remains the largest tapioca and substitutes supplier in MERCOSUR.
In Brazil, tapioca and substitutes exports increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 14%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Brazil.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Brazil amounted to +2.4% per year.

Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of tapioca and substitutes, when their volume decreased by -0.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tapioca and substitutes imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +59.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Paraguay (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Suriname (X tons) and Guyana (X tons) represented roughly 72% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Brazil (X tons), together achieving a 24% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +39.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Paraguay ($X), Ecuador ($X) and Chile ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Argentina, Colombia, Guyana, Brazil and Suriname, which together accounted for a further 36%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +41.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, growing by 27% against the previous year. Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Suriname ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
