Toilet Paper Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR toilet paper market amounted to $X in 2021, increasing by 6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, shipments abroad of toilet paper decreased by -12.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, toilet paper exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 33%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 60% of total exports. Peru (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Colombia (8.3%) and Uruguay (7.4%). Chile (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the toilet paper exports, with a CAGR of +18.3% from 2012 to 2021. Peru (-5.5%), Chile (-5.7%), Uruguay (-9.3%) and Colombia (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+48 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Chile (-1.7 p.p.), Uruguay (-9.1 p.p.), Peru (-10.3 p.p.) and Colombia (-20 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest toilet paper supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Peru ($X) and Colombia ($X), with a combined 85% share of total exports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +13.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

Toilet paper imports rose significantly to X tons in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toilet paper imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Paraguay (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Chile (X tons) represented the key importer of toilet paper in MERCOSUR, constituting 68% of total import. Guyana (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Venezuela (X tons) and Argentina (X tons). All these countries together held near 25% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uruguay (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Paraguay ($X) and Uruguay ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 64% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uruguay, with a CAGR of +10.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
