The MERCOSUR tomato ketchup market fell slightly to $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato ketchup exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +40.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2022, Chile (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) was the major exporter of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces in MERCOSUR, achieving 91% of total export. Peru (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Argentina ($X) and Brazil ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total exports. Peru, Colombia and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.8%.

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in MERCOSUR

Tomato ketchup imports expanded to X tons in 2022, growing by 1.9% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato ketchup imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 71%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons) represented the main importer of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces, creating 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Venezuela (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons), together making up a 49% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato ketchup imports into Chile stood at +18.7%. At the same time, Venezuela (+22.4%), Colombia (+10.6%), Uruguay (+5.6%), Argentina (+5.0%) and Paraguay (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Venezuela emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Brazil (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile, Venezuela and Colombia increased by +26, +5.6 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomato ketchup and tomato sauces in MERCOSUR, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Paraguay, with an 8.9% share.

In Chile, tomato ketchup imports increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (+11.2% per year) and Paraguay (+4.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
