Triticale Market Size in MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR triticale market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Triticale Production in MERCOSUR

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the triticale yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The triticale harvested area dropped significantly to X ha in 2022, which is down by -16.6% on 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 50%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of triticale, when their volume decreased by -18.2% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 238%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, triticale exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 134%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Argentina prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), making up a 6.9% share of total exports.

Argentina was also the fastest-growing in terms of the triticale exports, with a CAGR of +5.0% from 2012 to 2022. Peru (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Argentina (+29 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Peru (-28.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest triticale supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports.

In Argentina, triticale exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 9.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Peru amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (-2.2%).

Triticale Imports

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, overseas purchases of triticale increased by 9.8% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. Overall, imports recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 75,078%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, triticale imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 33,229%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the one major importers of triticale, namely Chile, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the triticale imports, with a CAGR of +128.9% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Chile (+99 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported triticale in MERCOSUR.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile amounted to +64.0%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, waning by -17.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.
